PEORIA, Ill. ?
Ninth-year Bradley women's basketball head coach
Paula Buscher received three commitments during the Fall Signing Period as 5-7 guard Brooke Bisping (Morton, Ill./Morton), 5-6 guard Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill./Lake Zurich) and 5-11 guard Katie Yohn (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) each signed National Letters of Intent to attend Bradley.
The 2008 Peoria Journal Star Large-School Player of the Year, Bisping helped Morton to the Class 3A sectional championship game. She led the Potters with a 21.1 points per game average and topped 30 points on four occasions last year. Bisping also hauled down 6.1 rebounds per game as a junior.
An all-state selection by the Associated Press, Chicago Sun-Times and Champaign News-Gazette as a junior, Bisping helped Morton to a fourth-place finish in the IHSA Class AA state tournament as a sophomore in 2006-07. She earned Peoria Journal Star first-team all-area honors as a sophomore, scoring 14.3 points per game. Bisping has scored more than 1,400 points and has connected on 163 three-pointers in her fist three prep seasons. She is a two-time all-area selection in volleyball and also lettered in soccer for the Potters.
"Brooke is a true competitor, she finds a way to win regardless of what sport she is playing," Buscher said. "She has three-point range as well as being able to get to the basket and finish with contact. I feel Brooke will continue to excel at the next level. She is a tremendous role model for kids in this area, she is a quality individual off the court and an extreme competitor on the court."
Allen earned All-North Suburban Conference honors as a junior, after averaging 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. She posted eight double-doubles and scored 20 or more points five times last year. She played AAU basketball with Yohn for Full Package/Lady Lightning and coach Mike Seberger.
"Olivia has tremendous speed and athleticism, she gets to the rim and causes defenses to breakdown," Buscher stated. "I believe Olivia's best basketball is ahead of her. She will remind our fans of Skye (Johnson) with her quickness."
Yohn was a second-team all-state selection by the Associated Press and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association as a junior. She also earned all-conference honors from the Suburban Catholic Conference and was the Daily Herald All-Area team co-captain last year. She averaged 20 points per game in 2007-08 in addition to averaging 5.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 4.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per contest.
The 11th player in St. Edward history to score 1,000 points, she enters her senior season with 1,127 career points. Yohn is the starting setter on the volleyball team and has also lettered in softball. She has helped the volleyball team to a 23-17 record this Fall and a trip to the Class 2A State semifinals Friday afternoon at Redbird Arena in Normal, Ill.
"Katie is a long athletic guard with very deep range," Buscher added. "She is quick off the dribble and makes everyone around her better. She had a terrific summer on the AAU circuit for Full Package/Lady Lightning. Katie is a good defender and a relentless worker, spending hours a day working on her game which will pay off for her next season."
"Olivia has explosive speed and great hops," Seberger said. "Yohn is a very consistent shooter, who has great anticipation on the defensive end of the floor."
Bradley opens the 2008-09 season Saturday when the Braves play host to Loyola-Chicago at 2:05 p.m. at Illinois Central College's Lorene Ramsey Gym. The game will be broadcast in the Peoria area on WMBD 1470 AM.
