PEORIA, Ill. -- Former Bradley softball player Janay Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) has been named an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar according to a recent announcement by the publication Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

A Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Candidate, Mitchell tied for second on the team with a .295 batting average and was a second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference performer in her final season on The Hilltop.  She ranked third on the team in runs, RBI and on base percentage, while driving in a career-best 14 runs in 2010.  This spring, Mitchell hit .313 in conference play and was second on the team in both hits and stolen bases.

Mitchell tied for the longest hit streak on the team at eight games and owned a .339 batting average with runner on base.  She finished her career fifth in school history with 36 career stolen bases and is tied for sixth at BU with 24 career sacrifice hits.

Diverse Issues in Higher Education established the Sports Scholar Award to honor undergraduate students of color who have had success academically and athletically. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, every college and university in the country is invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding scholar-athletes. Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars must own a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
