OMAHA, Neb. - Bradley freshman Michael Davis pulled out a 3-set win in the deciding match, leading the third-seeded Braves (15-13) to a 4-3 win against sixth-seeded and host Creighton (9-10) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men's Tennis Team Championship Friday at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center.
Friday's quarterfinal match took five hours to complete and the Braves prevailed by winning the day's final three matches after falling behind, 3-1. Having advanced to the MVC semifinals for the first time since 2006, the Braves will face tournament No. 2 seed Wichita State in a 2 p.m. match Saturday.
Creighton earned the match's first point when the No. 1 doubles team of Billy Paluch and Kyle Obermeier downed Justin Abrams and Juan Diego Cuadrado, 8-5, for a 2-to-1 edge in doubles play. The Bluejays then pushed their lead to 2-0 when Paluch blitzed freshman Ahmed Albitar 6-1, 6-0.
Abrams put the Braves on the board with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, but the Bluejays moved to within on point of the upset when Obermeier slipped by Ashton Kalhorn at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 7-6.
Cuadrado kept Bradley alive by rallying from a 6-4 loss in his opening set at No. 2 singles, taking the final two sets 6-1, 6-3. Eric Nguyen then pulled the Braves even with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, leaving Bradley's fate in Davis' court.
After cruising to a 6-1 win in his first set, Davis dropped the second set, 7-6, but rallied for a 6-2 win in the third set to secure the win.
