PEORIA, Ill. -- First-year Bradley women's basketball head coach Mike Brooks and his squad made their 2012-13 debuts Friday night at Renaissance Coliseum, with the White Squad edging the Red Team 30-27 in the team's annual Red-White Scrimmage.
Junior Catie O'Leary (Janesville, Wis./Parker/Wisconsin) and senior Katie Yohn (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) scored eight and seven points, respectively, to lead the Braves during the 16-minute exhibition. The duo spent the entire night on the Red squad, combining to make 7-of-12 from the field.
Bradley's most experienced post player, junior center Alyson Spinas-Valainis (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) split time between both teams; but scored all six of her points to help pace the White team. Sophomore Michelle Young (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) also added six points, playing the entire time with the victorious White squad.
In addition to the play of the upperclassmen, freshman Jenny Smith (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) helped highlight the action for the four newcomers on the roster. Splitting time between the two teams, Smith made 3-of-4 from the field and collected with six points and four boards.
Senior Brooke Bisping (Morton, Ill./Morton) added six points, four rounds, two assists and a steal, with the bulk of her production coming while she played for the White team. Junior point guard Kelsey Budd (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) dished out a game-high three assists without committing a turnover to go along with four points and a steal.
The Braves will play their only exhibition game of the year Thursday, Nov. 1 against Lindenwood (6:30 p.m.) at Renaissance Coliseum. .
