DEKALB, Ill. -- The Bradley women's cross country team had 10 individuals turn in season or career bests and the Bradley men's cross country boasted six of the top eight finishers at the NIU Huskie Open Friday afternoon.
Junior Whitney Schumacher (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) paced the women's team with a career-best 5K time of 18:09.70 to finish fourth overall. Schumacher's time was 11 seconds faster than her previous career-best effort as she outkicked BU freshman Arden Betzer (Central City, Iowa/Central City), who clocked a season-best 18:10.03 to finish fifth. Betzer was 40 seconds better than her previous season-best time.
Freshman Nick Kirk (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) finished second in the men's 5K to lead the Braves, crossing in the line in a time of 15:39.81, while sophomore Evan Tuisl (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) finished on Kirk's heels in third at 15:43.98.
Sophomore Kyela Specht (Munster, Ind./Munster) also helped highlight things for the women's squad, finishing 11th with a career-best time of 18:32.01 to shave 31 seconds off her career-best.
On the men's side, freshman Michael Kouri (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) paced a pack of four Bradley individuals with a time of 15:54.47 to finish fifth. Kouri was followed by freshmen Taras Didenko (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) in sixth (15:55.86), Thomas Razo (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) in seventh (15:58.85) and senior Nick Skromme (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette) in eighth (15:59.92).
The Bradley men's and women's cross country teams return to action next Friday at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo.
