PEORIA, Ill. -- Phil Kaiser (Berwyn, Ill./Nazareth Academy), a junior utility player for the Bradley University baseball team, died early Monday morning after being transported to Methodist Medical Center of Illinois. The cause of death has not been determined.
"Our community is deeply saddened today with this tragic and inexplicable loss," Bradley University President Joanne Glasser said. "Our heartfelt prayers go out to the Kaiser family, Phil's teammates and coaches and his many friends. We appreciate the many expressions of sympathy and ask for the community's continued support at this most difficult time."
A communications major focusing on advertising, Kaiser (21) appeared in 39 games during his two-year Bradley career, primarily as a pitcher, first baseman and designated hitter. He had a 1-0 record on the mound in 12 career relief appearances and he hit .283 with two doubles in 60 career at-bats.
"Our condolences and prayers obviously go out to Phil's family," said Bradley Baseball head coach Elvis Dominguez. "Phil was a great teammate and a great man and he had such a gravitating personality. You always felt better after having a conversation with him."
"Being part of a Bradley athletic team is a special experience that provides student-athletes with a second family," said Director of Athletics Dr. Michael Cross. "The athletic department, and the baseball team in particular, have lost an important member of our family. The unexpected passing of Phil Kaiser leaves a hole in our hearts. Our prayers and support are with the Kaiser Family, coaching staff and student-athletes during this difficult time."
A two-time all-conference performer at Nazareth Academy, Kaiser earned all-state honors as a junior in 2007 and helped the Roadrunners win a regional championship his senior year in 2008.
The son of Philip and Natalie Kaiser, he is also survived by his three siblings Jaclyn (25), Jillian (22) and Michael (16).
Funeral arrangements are pending and those details will be shared as soon as they are available.
