PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Lauren Zerante (Elmhurst, Ill./York) collected 18 digs and helped Bradley hold Illinois State to a .205 attack percentage, but the Redbirds capitalized on 30 BU attack errors to top the Braves 25-11, 25-23, 25-20 Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.
Junior Alise Tupuritis (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) tallied 12 kills to lead BU's offensive attack and Amy Angelos (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) had eight kills, while hitting .353. Bradley (7-14 overall, 1-9 MVC) hit just .034 on the night in the loss.
Illinois State (12-8 overall, 6-4 MVC) controlled the first set, scoring the first seven points of the match and pushed the advantage to 13-1 early in the opening frame. The Redbirds took advantage of 15 Bradley attack errors in the first set and cruised to a 25-11 win.
The second set was tight throughout, featuring seven lead changes and 12 ties, before Illinois State took control with a late run. The Braves trailed 20-19 when Tupuritis notched one of her seven second-set kills to spark a 4-0 BU spurt. Freshman Lea Sack (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) followed with an ace and a Courtney Keefe (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) kill preceded an ISU attack error as Bradley went in front 23-20.
Three consecutive BU attack errors proved to be costly, however, allowing the Redbirds to pull even at 23-23 and ISU went in front 24-23 on a LeighAnn Hranka kill. Ashley Rosch closed out a 25-23 ISU victory with her sixth kill of the set to give the Redbirds a two-sets-to-none lead.
Much like the second set, Bradley held a late lead (19-17) in the third set after a Tupuritis kill, before Illinois State used an 8-1 run to take the set and complete the sweep. The Braves committed five of their nine third-set attack errors to fuel the ISU spurt and libero Jenny Menendez sealed the victory with an ace to cap a 25-20 win for the Redbirds.
Keefe joined Zerante in double figures in digs, finishing with 13 digs to go along with seven kills to help lead the Braves.
Rosch led Illinois State with 11 kills and added 13 digs, while Satcey Niao helped highlight Illinois State's offensive efforts with 10 kills and 10 digs. Menendez was one of four Redbirds to reach double figures in digs, collecting a match-high 24 digs. Setter Kaitlyn Early had five kills, 29 assists, six digs an ace and five blocks.
Bradley closes out a season-long, four-match home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. match against Indiana State at Renaissance Coliseam. The contest against the Sycamores will be the annual Dig Pink game, with fans encouraged to wear pink.
