ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Senior Jenny Van Kirk (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) was a first-team Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete and fellow senior Renee Frericks (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) earned honorable mention MVC Scholar-Athlete recognition announced by the league office Tuesday.
A three-time MVC scholar-athlete honoree, Van Kirk was a second-team Valley Scholar-Athlete last year and was an honorable mention selection as a sophomore. She is the first Bradley player to earn First-Team Valley Scholar-Athlete honors since Genny Mueller in 2004-05. Van Kirk is a two-team ESPN the Magazine All-District V selection and also joined Mueller as the only two-time Academic All-District selections in program history. One of 30 national candidates for the Lowe's Senior Class Award, she has been named the Bradley Scholar-Athlete of the Week twice this year and seven times in her career. Bradley's active career leader in assists, she was named a Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award winner last year and has twice been selected as Bradley's Carl Grose Service Award winner. The only player on the team to start all 28 games this season Van Kirk has been voted a team co-captain each of the last two years. She is fourth on the team in scoring at 6.7 points per game and second on the squad in rebounding in addition to ranking third in assists this season. Van Kirk owns a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average and is enrolled in Bradley's Individualized Major Program. Frericks earned Valley Scholar-Athlete recognition for the first time in her career. A secondary education major, she owns a 3.92 grade point average and was named a second-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V selection earlier this year. Frericks has started a career-best 15 games this season, while helping Bradley to a 10-5 record in that time. She is averaging 5.3 points per game and is dishing out a team-best 2.3 assists per outing. A team co-captain, she is Bradley's active career leader with 96 career three-pointers and is averaging 5.8 points per game in MVC play. Bradley tied for third in the final MVC regular-season standings and is the #4 seed in this week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Braves will face #5 seed Northern Iowa at 2:35 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals at The Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. Fans attending the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament are encouraged to attend a sendoff for the women's basketball team Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet at 191 West Port Plaza in St. Louis. |
