ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Junior Sonya Harris (Riverdale, Ill./Thornton) is a repeat Second-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection and freshman guard Katie Yohn (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) earned honorable mention All-Valley honors announced by the league office Wednesday. Harris also earned a spot in the Valley's All-Defensive team for the second consecutive year, while Yohn was selected to the MVC's All-Freshman team.
The first two-time all-conference selection for the Braves since Sara Bailey, Harris is third on the team in scoring at 9.0 points per game and ranks fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference in field goal percentage (49.3 percent). She is second in the Valley in rebounding, hauling down 10.0 boards per game and leads the league in blocked shots at 2.1 per contest. Harris is one of two repeat selections on the All-Defensive team and joined former teammate Skye Johnson as the only two-time All-Defensive team selections in school history. She has pulled down 279 rebounds this season, which ranks as the third-best season total in program history and is the only player at Bradley with two seasons with 50 or more blocked shots. Harris has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 16 of 28 games this season and scored in double figures in eight of the last 12 games overall, where she is averaging 10.9 points on 55.3 percent shooting and 11.0 rebounds per game during that stretch. Currently eighth on the MVC's career blocked shot list with 171 career rejections she is second in school history in the category. Harris is ninth in school history with 663 career rebounds and is tied with fellow junior Raisa Taylor with 696 career points as Bradley's active career scoring leader. Yohn is the Braves leader scorer on the year, averaging 9.9 points per game. One of two freshman and five underclassmen to earn all-conference honors this year, she is the first Bradley freshman to earn all-conference recognition since Karin Nicholls was an honorable mention all-conference selection in 1985-86. Third among Valley freshmen in scoring, Yohn averaged a team-best 10.4 points per game in Missouri Valley Conference play. She was second on the team in blocks and steals, while ranking fourth in assists and joined Heather Best as the only freshmen in program history with 200 points, 50 assists, 15 blocks and 30 steals. Yohn's 277 points is the seventh best total by a Bradley freshman and her 50 three-pointers is the second best total by a BU freshman. A three-time MVC Newcomer of the Week pick, she has a chance to become the first freshman to lead the team in scoring since Connie Griffith led the Braves with an 18.3 points per game average as a freshman in 1977-78. Bradley has had six players named to the Valley's All-Freshman team during head coach Paula Buscher's 10 years on The Hilltop and this is the third time the Braves have had two or more players garner all-conference recognition in the same year during her tenure. Bradley tied for third in the final MVC regular-season standings and is the #4 seed in this week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Braves will face #5 seed Northern Iowa Friday at 2:35 p.m. in the quarterfinals at The Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. Fans attending the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament are encouraged to attend a sendoff for the women's basketball team Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet at 191 West Port Plaza in St. Louis. |
