LAKELAND, Fla. - Sophomore right-hander Jacob Booden (Vernon Hills, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) remained unbeaten on the season and freshman outfielder Christian Segar (Mendon, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit H.S.) belted his first career homerun as Bradley took the second game of a double-header against Army 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Henley Field.
Booden and Army's Logan Lee were locked in a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the fourth, when senior first baseman Mike McMillan (Bloomington, Ill./Normal University H.S.) ripped a two-out RBI single that scored senior infielder Matt Fritz (Northbrook, Ill./DePauw University/Glenbrook North H.S.) to give Bradley a 1-0 lead.
The Braves added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth with Segar's two-out two-run blast to left-center field, making it a 3-0 game. The Black Knights finally got to Booden in the seventh with a lead-off double, followed by an RBI single to make the score 3-1. With the tying run at the plate and no outs, senior right-hander Brad Altbach (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North H.S.) replaced Booden and retired the next three batters to preserve the 3-1 win.
Four different Braves had two hits in the game, including Fritz, McMillan, junior outfielder Brian Martin (Glen Ellyn, Ill./College of DuPage/Lombard Montini Catholic H.S.) and sophomore infielder Rob Elliott (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.). Booden (3-0) allowed just one earned run on four hits and struck out five in 6.0 innings of work, while Altbach picked up his first save of the season.
Bradley (6-8) will wrap up the Russmatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational tomorrow with an 11 a.m. matchup against Dartmouth.
