WICHITA, Kan. -- Sophomore Alex Chandler (Needles, Calif./Needles) and freshman Shannon King (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) were both 3-for-4 to help Bradley match a season-high with 12 hits in a 9-2 victory against Wichita State in the first game of a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday. The Shockers rebounded to take the second game 8-2.
Bradley (18-27 overall, 8-14 MVC) moved closer to locking up a spot in the eight-team State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with a 9-2 victory in the opener. The Braves scored the first seven runs, using a five-run fourth to take control and cruise to the 9-2 win in the day's first game.
BU loaded the bases in the top of the first on a walk, hit by pitch and fielder's choice, before sophomore Bailiegh Basham (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon/Lake Land C.C.) scored on another fielder's choice in the inning to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (Sedro-Woolley, Wash./Sedro-Woolley), who pushed her hit streak to five games, got things started in the top of the third with a two-out triple and scored on a RBI single off the bat of freshman Alyson Clemente (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley).
Bradley blew the game open in the top of the fourth, scoring five times to build a 7-0 lead. King led off the frame with a double and scored when senior Julie Sherman (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) reached on a fielder's choice. Basham drove in another run on a fielder's choice and a bases loaded walk to Clemente gave BU a 5-0 advantage. Chandler capped the inning with a two-run double to left center.
Wichita State (14-36 overall, 7-16 MVC) got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, but Roth knocked in a pair with a two-run single in the top of the fifth as Bradley built a 9-2 lead.
Lynch-Crumrine did not allow a hit in the final three innings and improved to 9-16 on the year with the complete game victory. She scattered six hits and struck out two, while walking none in her 16th complete game effort of the year.
In the nightcap, Wichita State got its revenge by jumping out to a 7-0 lead and cruised to the 8-2 win. The Shockers capitalized on a BU error in the in the bottom of the third with Sydney Stuever breaking up a scoreless game with a two-run homer to right to put Wichita State in front 2-0.
The Shockers added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth with Danika Miller highlighting the frame with a two-run single and Stuever capping the inning with her third RBI of the contest on a two-out double.
Consecutive singles by King, sophomore Mariah Cole (Springfield, Ill./Chatham Glenwood) and Sherman to open the top of the fifth loaded the bases for Bradley and the Braves scored runs on a Wichita State error and wild pitch to cut the Wichita State advantage to 7-2.
Stuever drove in her fourth run of the game, however, in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out single and Shocker hurler Sloan Anderson retired Bradley in order in the sixth and seventh to close out the 8-2 Wichita State win.
Junior Mackenzie Camp (Mapleton, Ill./Limestone) took the loss for the Braves, falling to 7-10 on the season. She gave up four hits and three runs (one earned) in three innings. King went 5-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader to highlight Bradley's offensive attack.
The Braves and Shockers close out the three-game MVC series Sunday with a single game at noon in Wichita, Kan.
