ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Sophomore outfielder Mariah Cole (Springfield, Ill./Chatham Glenwood) has been named one of 10 Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award spring recipients, according to an announcement by the league office Tuesday.
Cole started 47 games in the outfield for the Braves this spring and appeared in all but one contest. She was fourth on the team with seven stolen bases and her 14 runs scored were sixth on the squad. Cole hit .306 with runners in scoring position and was tied for third on the team with five two-out RBI. She boasted a perfect fielding percentage on 54 chances and owned a team-best eight outfield assists.
A health science major, she owns a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average and was given Bradley's Carl Grose Service Award earlier this month in recognition of her community service efforts. In addition to the team's annual community service projects, Cole assisted with Bradley Athletics annual Megan Fong Blood and Bone Marrow Drive along with Student-Athlete Day.
Cole is a member of the Braves Council, serving as secretary for the student-athlete advisory board and was selected to represent Bradley at an NCAA Leadership Forum last November. She has taken the lead on the Bradley Softball team's Community Service Committee, helping to determine beneficiaries in addition organizing and implementing the team's community service efforts.
Her list of volunteer activities include The Festival of Trees, BU Dance Party clean-up, Loaves and Fishes, fundraiser for Kelly Dunn, Special Olympics, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Animal Protective League, Key Club, recycling initiatives, local food pantries in Springfield, Bradley Softball's "Julie" fundraiser, Trinity Food Pantry and taking part in the State Farm Just Read program.
In an effort to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes, the Missouri Valley Conference, in partnership with State Farm, has created the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor Award. In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service and participate in a sport during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring) for a total of 30 honorees each school year.
