COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Bradley men's tennis player Ashton Kalhorn (Colorado Springs, Colo./Coronado [Nev.] H.S.) dropped only one set in three matches to win the opening tournament in the Mountain Region of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit this past weekend at the United States Air Force Academy.
After breezing through his first two matches Saturday 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-2, respectively, Kalhorn faced Air Force sophomore Joey Brandt in the championship match Sunday. Kalhorn, who will be a junior for the Braves in 2012-13, dropped the first set 2-6, but fought back to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3 to claim the tournament title.
With the win, Kalhorn now holds the points lead in the Mountain Region with two tournaments remaining. The cumulative points leader after tournament play is completed will advance to the ITA Summer National Tournament.
The ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit is made up of eight regional circuits (East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Texas and West) for collegiate players (events are also open to junior players). All eight regions consist of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, leading up to the ITA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Ind., in August. The ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit began in 1993 and more than 30,000 players have competed in circuit events since its inception.
