Release: Friday 07/29/2012

PEORIA, Ill. – Bradley men’s tennis coach Jesse Plote successfully defended his Peoria Tennis Association Tri-County Tournament Men’s Singles title by downing one of his former players Sunday afternoon at Glen Oak Park.  Plote then capped off his championship Sunday by teaming with Matt Mariss to win the Men's Doubles Open title.

In a rematch of the 2011 championship match, Plote earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory against former Bradley star Evgeny Samoylov in a match that lasted nearly two hours.  The tournament’s No. 1 seed, Plote did not drop a set in his four tournament matches.

An hour after defending his singles title, Plote teamed with Mariss for a 6-2, 6-4 win against the duo of Greg Davis and Alex Gomez in the doubles final.  In a similar pattern to Plote's singles run, he and Mariss did not drop a set in their four tournament matches.

Plote is preparing for his fifth season at the helm of the Bradley men’s tennis program.  He returns all nine players from his 2012 squad that posted a 15-14 overall dual-match record and finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference standings.

A native of Velikiy Novgorod, Russia, Samoylov earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bradley and has made his permanent home in East Peoria.  He was a two-time Capital One Academic All-American for the Braves, earning third-team honors in the At-Large category in 2008 and 2009, as well as a three-time, first-team Valley Scholar-Athlete.
