PEORIA, Ill. -- Iowa's Kayla Beattie won the women's three-mile race and Indiana State's Dustin Betz claimed the men's 8K title at the 26th Bradley Open Friday afternoon at a rain-soaked Detweiller Park.
Beattie paced four Iowa runners at the front of the women's field, crossing the line in a time of 16:44. She beat out teammate Mareike Schrulle by eight seconds, posting a time 29 seconds faster than last year's
Bradley Open individual champion.
On the men's side, Indiana State had the top three finishers all cross the line within three seconds of each other to finish atop the individual standings. Betz outkicked fellow Sycamores John Mascari and Al Escalera, crossing the line in time of 24:57.
The Division I race was scored as individual duals with team scores deciding the college division race. Illinois Wesleyan claimed the women's college division title with 30 points, while Morton College tallied 47 points on the men's side to edge Illinois Central College (53 points).
Youth prevailed for the Bradley women, with freshmen accounting for four of BU's top six finishers and six of the top nine Braves in the field. Junior Cassie Lohmeier paced the women's team, clocking a career-best 17:21 in the three-mile race. Lohmeier, who was fifth in the field, beat her previous career-best 3-mile time by 11 seconds.
Sophomore Sarah McMahon was eight seconds behind Lohmeier in sixth at 17:29 and was followed by four BU freshmen. Freshman Liz Smits paced the newcomers with a time of 18:01 to finish 11th, while Lauren Houmes (14th - 18:04), Rachel Sudbury (16th - 18:12) and Kristen Busch (18th - 18:16) were close behind.
Sophomore Chase Coffey led the BU men's team, turning in a career-best 8k time of 25:55 to place 13th. Coffey's time was the fastest effort by a Brave in the Bradley Open since 2007 and 10th fastest time by a BU runner in the history of the event.
Freshman Cole Dill had a strong debut for the Braves, finishing right behind Coffey in 14th at 26:08, while junior Nathan Davis was 18th in the field at 26:23 to pace three consecutive Bradley runners. Freshman Michael Kouri was six seconds back in 19th (26:29) and junior Daniel Allen was 20th at 26:31 to help lead the men's squad.
Both the Bradley men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action next Friday (5 p.m.) at the Illinois Intercollegiates in Normal, Ill.
