DES MOINES, Iowa – A quartet of Braves advanced into the championship bracket following Friday’s pool play during the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Individual Championships at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
Junior Justin Abrams won both of his matches Friday to win Flight 5 Singles Pool 2 and claim one of the four spots in the Flight 5 championship bracket. Sophomore Ahmed Albitar, who earned MVC All-Select honors last spring, split his two pool matches Friday and earned his place on the Flight 3 Singles championship bracket as the runner-up in his pool.
The 8-man Flight 7 Singles draw began with bracket play and sophomore Michael Davis advanced to the second round with a 3-set victory in his only match of the day. Though junior Kevin Keiner lost his only match in pool play in Flight 6, he automatically advanced to the championship bracket.
Arthur Romanet (Flight 1), Hamish Weerasinghe (Flight 2) and Juan Diego Cuadrado (Flight 4) all were 0-2 in Friday’s pool play and drop into the consolation brackets of their respective Flights.
Albitar bounced back from a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Drake’s Alen Salibasic with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win against Southern Illinois’ Jorge Cavero to earn his spot in the Flight 3 Singles championship bracket.
Abrams punched his ticket to the Flight 5 Singles championship bracket with a pair of straight-set victories: 6-4, 6-2 against Southern Illinois’ Rafael Cuadrillero and 6-3, 6-1 against Illinois State’s Muddappa Appanervanda.
After Davis and Southern Illinois’ Orhan Spahic split a pair of lopsided sets – 6-2, 1-6 – Davis pulled out a 7-5 victory in the third set to reach the second round of the Flight 7 championship bracket.
Saturday’s action will begin with three flights of doubles play, which will be followed by the first round of singles bracket play. The championship matches will be played Sunday.
