ST. LOUIS – Junior men’s tennis player Ashton Kalhorn (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is Bradley’s recipient of the Spring 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Leadership & Service Award, according to an announcement from the league office Wednesday morning.
A chemistry business major, Kalhorn has maintained a perfect, 4.0 cumulative grade point average through his first five college semesters while moving into the top 25 on the Bradley men’s tennis all-time wins list with 55 career victories. A first-team honoree on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District V squad in the at-large category and a 2012 MVC Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete, Kalhorn has been nominated for both awards again this spring.
In addition to his play on the court and success in the classroom, Kalhorn has played in the first two Easter Seals Piano Concerts, while also organizing the 2013 event, helping to raise more than $2,400 for Easter Seals. He also volunteers in the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center emergency room on Saturday evenings, as well as the MVC’s Just Read program. A 2012-13 Bradley Men’s Tennis team captain, he represented his team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council during the 2011-12 school year.
In order to be eligible for the MVC Leadership & Service Award, student-athletes must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service and must participate in a sport during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes, one from each full-time member school, three times annually (fall, winter, spring) for a total of 30 honorees.
