PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley women’s golf head coach Mary Swanson added a trio of freshmen to the 2014-15 roster with Tuesday’s announcement that Grace Henderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga./Blessed Trinity), Ally Scaccia (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) and Abby Wellens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) have signed National Letters of Intent.
Henderson finished fourth in the state as a junior and is a two-time team MVP for the Lady Titans. She claimed the 2012 North Georgia Junior Open title and was runner-up at the 2013 Georgia Club Junior Classic. As a sophomore, she received the team’s St. Sebastian Award, in recognition of her athletic accomplishments, academics, leadership and character.
“Grace is a very dedicated and well rounded student-athlete,” said Swanson. “She can’t wait to join the team and soak up the opportunity to learn from the coaching staff and her future teammates. She will take every opportunity that she is given to grow and learn and her work ethic will be contagious.”
An all-state performer as a senior, Scaccia helped the Knights to state championships as a senior and sophomore in addition to a second-place finish her junior year. She claimed conference medalist honors this fall in addition to garnering, all-conference, all-region and all-sectional honors in her final prep season. Scaccia finished seventh in the state in 2013 and was the runner-up at her team’s sectional this fall.
“Ally has been an integral part of the strong golf tradition at Prospect High School,” added Swanson. “Part of a two-time state champion, she will bring invaluable experience to our program immediately in addition to her tremendous work ethic. We look forward to her enthusiasm and drive to enhance our team.”
Wellens was a 10-time medalist last year as a senior and claimed a state sectional title this fall. She posted a 37.3 scoring average in her final prep season and helped the Lions to four consecutive conference and sectional titles. Wellens was second at the conference championship her senior year and was a three-time all-conference honoree. She earned first-team all-district honors each of the last two seasons and helped Ursuline to top-10 state finishes each of the last two years, including a fourth-place finish as a junior.
“Abby gained quite a bit of confidence due to her strong play at the end of the 2013 summer,” stated Swanson. “That confidence, in addition to her belief in our core values and goals, will be invaluable as we continue to make strides as a program.”
The Bradley women’s golf team is scheduled to open the spring season Feb. 3 & 4 in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., with the Mid-American Match Play.
