PEORIA, Ill. -- In a dominating performance from start to finish in both doubles and singles, the Bradley women’s tennis team (1-0) swept Western Illinois (0-2) 7-0 to give first-year Braves head coach Matt Tyler his first Bradley win Thursday afternoon at the Clubs at River City North.
“I was very happy with the way we competed today,” said Tyler. “A nice way to start the season. It’s always nice to come away with a win and I feel like the girls played well.”
The Braves got on the board right away, securing the double’s point with two near-simultaneous wins. Sarah Rodefeld and Carly Miles won at No. 3 doubles, besting Western Illinois’ Ese Davis and Andriana Johnson by a 6-0 score. Right as that match was ending, the Braves secured the day's first point when the No. 1 doubles team of Adele Henke and Ashley Thai also completed a 6-0 sweep against the WIU pairing of Nicole Jones and Jenna Wallace. The Braves finished the doubles sweep when Ariel Dechter and Elizabeth Przystawski won at No. 2, defeating Jessica Callahan and Holly Conlin, 6-1.
Bradley kept up the same scoring dominance in singles action, surrendering only two games in the 12 singles sets. Freshmen Ariel Dechter (No. 2 singles) and Ashley Thai (No. 3) both turned in 6-0, 6-0 victories for their first collegiate dual match wins, while senior Sarah Rodefeld (No. 4) and junior Cassia Wojtalik (No. 5) also added 6-0, 6-0 wins. Junior Carly Miles clinched the team victory by scoring the fourth point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles and senior Adele Henke made it a clean sweep when she won her No. 1 singles match by a 6-1, 6-0 score.
The Braves will return to action Feb. 7, when they travel to Saint Louis for their first road match of the 2014 dual season.
