Bradley Athletics teams have been known as the Braves since the 1920s when then baseball/men's basketball/football coach and athletic director A.J. Robertson determined too many schools used the Indians nickname and wanted something more distinctive. In 1992, however, the school removed all Native American imagery in reference to its athletics teams while introducing a bobcat mascot.
The bobcat never gained popular acceptance, however, and disappeared from the sidelines before being officially removed as mascot in 2000. Bradley University went without a mascot until the introduction of Kaboom! during the Feb. 22, 2014 men's basketball game versus Loyola Chicago at Carver Arena.
Kaboom! is a gargoyle modeled after The Thinker, which sits atop the Hayden-Clark Alumni Center and watches over the Alumni Quad on the west side of the Bradley University campus. Gargoyles have had a presence on the Bradley University campus from the school's beginning as part of the architecture of the school's signature building, Bradley Hall. A new collection of gargoyles was added to the campus community when the Hayden-Clark Alumni Center was completed in 2011.
During the athletic department's re-branding campaign in 2012, research revealed a desire by the school's many constituents to explore the introduction of a mascot to represent the campus-wide community. More extensive research suggested the gargoyle as the most popular option. Working with the Joe Bosack Graphic Design Company and Street Characters, Inc., Kaboom! has become reality.
The mascot's name, Kaboom!, originated with Hall of Fame Voice of the Braves Dave Snell, who has used the term to energetically describe slam dunks during Bradley men's basketball games since the late 1970s. But the descriptor can be used to emphasize the success of all Bradley University students and their wide-ranging activities of excellence.
In addition to appearances at Bradley Athletics home events and Bradley University campus activities, Kaboom! is available for public appearances throughout the Peoria area. To schedule a visit by Kaboom!, contact the Bradley University Department of Athletics at 309-677-2671.
