PEORIA, Ill. -- Dallas Baptist took advantage of a wild pitching effort from the Bradley staff to earn a 17-6 win in eight innings in its first-ever Missouri Valley Conference game Friday night at Dozer Park.
The effort spoiled Bradley's home opener after the Braves (15-6, 1-3 MVC) had posted their best 20-game start to a season since 2005.
Five Bradley pitchers combined to issue 11 walks and hit a Dozer Park record eight batters, setting the table for Dallas Baptist's second straight offensive explosion. The Patriots (18-7, 1-0 MVC) were coming off a 20-10 win Tuesday at Stephen F. Austin.
Bradley starter David Koll set the tone by issuing three walks then hitting Austin Listi on his 19th and final pitch, giving Dallas Baptist a 1-0 lead without recording an out.
The Patriots scored three in the first, but the Braves came right back with one in their half of the first on a Greg Partyka sacrifice fly, then pulled even with two runs in the second on an Isaac Smith RBI single and Chris Godinez RBI groundout.
But the wildness persisted from the Bradley pitching staff. Getting their leadoff man on base to start each of the final six innings, the Patriots scored three in the third, two in the fourth, five in the sixth and two each in the seventh and eighth.
Dallas Baptist leadoff hitter Drew Turbin was 2-for-4 with two walks, two runs scored and four RBI's to lead the visiting effort.
Bradley entered the game with the top two hitters in The Valley and they added to their numbers: Smith was 2-for-4 to raise his average to .475, while Tyler Leffler was 3-for-4 to boost his average to .419.
The teams will continue their weekend series with a 2 p.m. game Saturday at Dozer Park. As part of the Kids Super Weekend, all children in eighth grade and younger will be permitted to run the bases after Saturday's game and Bradley's new gargoyle mascot, Kaboom!, will make his Bradley Baseball debut and will greet fans on the concourse during the fifth inning. Free parking will be available in the Caterpillar parking lost directly across Jefferson Street starting 90 minutes before the game.
