PEORIA, Ill. -- The Bradley men’s tennis team dropped its Missouri Valley Conference opener 5-2 to Southern Illinois Thursday afternoon at the Clubs at River City South.
The Salukis (8-8 overall, 1-0 MVC) opened the match by winning two of three doubles matches to claim the first point of the contest. Freshman Niko Rakitin and Dan Rodefeld came through with the Braves’ lone doubles win, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.
SIU quickly took No. 1, 3, and 4 singles to decide the match. Senior Hamish Weerasinghe (6-4, 6-4 at No. 5) and Rodefeld (6-3, 6-3 at No. 6) earned the Braves their lone point with wins in singles play.
The Braves hit the road for a pair of weekend matches, traveling to UMKC (Saturday, 2 p.m.) for the final non-conference match of the spring season before stepping back into MVC play with a 10 a.m. matchup at Wichita State Sunday.
