Basham Earns 2014 Charles Orsborn Award
Release: Thursday 05/05/2014

PEORIA, Ill. – Not only was Bradley Softball player Bailiegh Basham (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon H.S.) recognized for her inspirational battle against a debilitating physical condition, she was honored as Bradley University’s top senior student-athlete during the athletic department’s annual All About The B Awards Monday night at Renaissance Coliseum.

After being presented with the 12th annual Megan C. Fong Inspiration Award midway through Monday’s awards show, Basham was selected from a quartet of finalists as the recipient of the 64th annual Charles Orsborn Award, which is the highest honor Bradley University bestows on a graduating student-athlete and recognizes the senior who has best combined athletic and academic success with community service.

Basham suffers from a glycogen storage disorder that causes her to suffer full body cramps, often during games and practices. She also tore ligaments in her thumb last spring, an injury that resulted in surgery to insert pins into her hand. Quietly playing through the pain, Basham owns Bradley Softball’s career records for on-base percentage (.491), bases on balls (70) and hit-by-pitches (30). She was a second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection in 2013 after finishing second in The Valley with a .381 batting average and smashing her own single-season record for on-base percentage at .532.

Boasting a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average as an advertising major, Basham was a first-team MVC Scholar-Athlete and a second-team Capital One Academic All-District V selection in 2013. The vice president of the Braves Council student-athlete advisory group in 2013-14, Basham has dedicated time to charities in both Peoria and her hometown of Mattoon.

In other awards presented Monday night, former football player Ron Hall ’53 received the 14th annual Orville Nothdurft Lifetime Achievement Award and senior cross country and track runner Nathan Davis (Lewistown, Ill./Lewistown H.S.) earned the 35th annual Carl Grose Service Award. The female and male versions of the eighth annual Coach Joe Stowell Awards were presented to cross country and track runner Emily Delvo (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin H.S.) and senior soccer player Jason Coon (Charleston, Ill./Charleston H.S.).

A lineman for the Bradley Football team, Hall entered into the oil business after earning Bradley’s third-annual Charles Orsborn Award (then the Watonga Award) in 1953. He began his career in sales and marketing for Shell Oil and rose to vice president for the oil giant, before stints at Gulf Oil and, finally, CITGO Petroleum, where he became president and chief executive officer.

Inducted into the Bradley Athletics Hall of Fame in 1956 in recognition of his playing career on the gridiron, he also has been inducted into the Bradley University Centurion Society in recognition for his success in business and industry and he served on the Bradley University Board of Trustees for 12 years. He also established the Ronald Hall Scholarship for student-athletes enrolled in the Foster College of Business in 1992 and two years later made a $1.25 million donation to Bradley’s general fund, one of the largest individual donations ever to the school.

While the 48th annual Alumni B-Club Most Outstanding Athletes will not be determined until the conclusion of the athletic year, 11 nominees were introduced during Monday night’s program: Kristen Busch (women’s cross country/track); Chase Coffey (men’s cross country/track); Emily Delvo (women’s cross country/track); Eric Delvo (men’s cross country/track); Marina Groenewegen (softball); Danielle Lemek (women’s golf); Walt Lemon, Jr. (men’s basketball); Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (softball); Sarah McMahon (women’s cross country/track); Danny Masrin (men’s golf); and Wojciech Wojcik (soccer).
