ST. LOUIS - Bradley freshman forward Luuk van Bree (Venray, The Netherlands) is the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office Monday afternoon.
The 6-foot-9 forward helped the Braves (4-21) split a pair of games last week by averaging 16.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals, while shooting 52.4 percent (11-21) from the field. In Tuesday's 77-71 loss at Missouri State, van Bree scored 18 points and helped the Braves rally from an early 22-4 deficit to within two points in the final minute. He followed with 15 points in Saturday's 63-58 win against Indiana State.
Van Bree buried two 3-point field goals in both games last week and he leads all Valley freshmen with 38 treys this season. He also ranks second among all MVC freshman by averaging 8.5 points per game and third in rebounding at 4.4 boards per game.
Bradley has claimed the MVC Newcomer-of-the-Week award twice this season: freshman guard Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye was the season's first winner Nov. 16 after contributing 18 pionts, eight rebounds and three assists in the season-opening win against Ball State. The Braves boast The Valley's top four freshman scorers and four of the league's top six freshman rebounders.
The Braves will return to action Wednesday by hosting Loyola Chicago (11-13) in a 7 p.m. game at Carver Arena. Presented by Morton Buildings, the popular magic act Quick Change will perform at halftime, and Bradley University Professor Emeritus Dr. Joe Emmanuel will be presented the 2016 Varsity Club Billy Stone Service Award during the game.
Bradley Basketball single-game ticket prices begin at just $8 and are available for purchase in advance through the Bradley Athletics Ticket Office (309-677-2625) at Renaissance Coliseum or online through TicketMaster.
