TEMPE, Ariz. -- Bradley trailed 4-1 going into the sixth inning before Idaho State scored three runs in the top of the sixth and added another nine runs in the seventh to top the Braves 16-1 Friday afternoon to wrap the first day of play for BU at the Kajikawa Classic.
Idaho State (1-1 overall) roughed up Bradley pitching for five home runs and 23 hits to hand Bradley (1-1 overall) its first loss of the year. Amanda Fitzsimmons gave up just four hits and one earned run in the complete game victory, while helping her cause at the plate by going 5-for-6 with two homers, a triple, three runs and five RBI.
The Bengals held a 3-0 lead in the third after Vicky Galasso hit a three-run homer.
Bradley got three of its four hits in the bottom half of the third inning. Sophomore Mariah Cole (Springfield, Ill./Catham Glenwood) led off the frame with an infield single and later scored on a RBI double off the bat of senior Jackie Roth (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg).
Ashley Moeller pushed the Idaho State lead to 4-1 with a home run to lead off the top of the fourth inning and the Bengals broke the game open with three more runs in the top of the sixth.
Galasso belted her second homer of the game in the sixth, hitting a three-run shot to give her team a 7-1 advantage and Idaho State smashed two-run and three-run homers in the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Bengals scored nine runs on 10 hits in the top of the seventh.
Junior Mackenzie Camp (Mapleton, Ill./Limestone) suffered the loss in the circle for the Braves, despite striking out five and walking just one in three innings of work.
Bradley continues play at the Kajikawa Classic Saturday, facing third-ranked California at 10 a.m. (CST).
