WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State right-hander Jordan Cooper tossed a complete game five-hitter Friday night as the Shockers topped the Braves 5-1 in the first Missouri Valley Conference contest for both teams. Bradley's lone run came with two outs in the top of the ninth when sophomore Brad Kimball (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) delivered a pinch-hit homerun.

Cooper and Bradley junior right-hander Patrick Cooper (Danville, Ky./Des Moines Area C.C./Boyle County H.S.) were locked in a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the fifth, when the Shockers erupted for three runs on four hits to take a 3-0 lead.

The Braves tried to answer in the sixth with back-to-back one-out singles, but J. Cooper got freshman outfielder Mike Tauchman (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd H.S.) to strike out looking and junior outfielder Brian Martin (Glen Ellyn, Ill./College of DuPage/Lombard Montini Catholic H.S.) was caught trying to steal home to end the threat.

Wichita State tacked on two more runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI double by Chris O'Brien, to take a 5-0 advantage. Kimball spoiled J. Cooper's shutout with his second homerun of the season in the ninth, but J. Cooper rebounded to record the final out of the game, 5-1.

P. Cooper (0-3) took the loss on the mound for Bradley, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings of work.

The Braves (6-10, 0-1 MVC) and Shockers (12-7, 1-0 MVC) will play game two of their three-game set tomorrow at 2 p.m.
