PEORIA, Ill. - After the teams exchanged 5-4 wins in 11 innings in the first two games of their weekend Missouri Valley Conference baseball series, Indiana State (28-9, 8-4 MVC) rode an 8-run second inning to a 14-3 victory at Bradley (18-14-1, 4-5 MVC) in the rubber game Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field.
Sycamores first baseman Jon Hedges was 2-for-4 and hit a 3-run home run to highlight the second-inning outburst.
Bradley had a chance to escape the second inning unscathed after the Sycamores loaded the bases with one out. Designated hitter Landon Curry hit a hot shot to Bradley second baseman Chris Godinez, but rather than starting an inning-ending double play, the ball shot between the second baseman's legs. Two runs scored on the play and the flood gates opened from there.
Indiana State banged out three more hits in the inning, capped by the Hedges blast onto the left field concourse.
After Bradley got two runs back in the bottom of the second on an Austin Jarvis 2-run homer, Indiana State added three runs in the third and two more in the fifth to set up an early ending as the game was called after seven innings due to the league's 10-run rule.
Ryan Torgerson (6-1) went the distance and earned the win for the Sycamores by scattering seven hits and striking out three in his 7.0 innings. Bradley starter Patrick Flanagan (1-1) could not follow up on his strong outing last week against Missouri State and suffered the loss by allowing seven runs, six earned, on four hits and three walks in 1.1 innings.
Bradley will be on the road for its next four games, beginning with a Wednesday night visit to Iowa. The Braves then will head east on Interstate 74 for a 3-game series against rival Illinois State next weekend at Duffy Bass Field. The series opener against the Redbirds will start with a 4:30 p.m. game Friday.
