PEORIA, Ill. - Bradley junior outfielder Max Murphy (Robbinsdale, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper H.S.) has collected a pair of weekly Player-of-the-Week awards following his standout showing this past weekend at Austin Peay's Riverview Inn Classic. Murphy is a Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.
Of the five players recognized by Collegiate Baseball Monday, Murphy was the only position player (the other four were pitchers). He helped the Braves to a 2-1 record during the Riverview Inn Classic by batting. 500 and reaching base safely in 10-of-16 overall plate appearances with six runs scored and six runs batted in. Most noteworthy, he tied the single-game school records for home runs and total bases when he belted three home runs in Saturday's 11-5 win against Dayton. He became the fifth player in Bradley history to hit three home runs and total 12 bases in a game and the first since Chad Johnson in 1998. Murphy started the round-robin event by going 1-for-3 with a walk and two hit-by-pitches in Friday's 15-5 win against Xavier and concluded the weekend by going 2-for-4 with another hit by pitch in Saturday's 10-6 loss at Austin Peay.
For the season, Murphy is batting .324 and he leads the team with 14 runs scored, while ranking second with 13 runs batted in.
Murphy's play has helped the Braves to a 7-2 record through the season's first three weeks, the team's best 9-game start since the 2005 squad also opened 7-2 en route to a final 28-22 overall record. The Braves are schedule to return to action this weekend in Dayton, Ohio with two games apiece against Dayton and Wright State.
