PEORIA, Ill. - Spencer Gaa was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Elliot Ashbeck delivered a 2-run single and six Bradley pitchers combined on a 6-hitter, leading the host Braves (21-16) to a 5-1 win against SIU Edwardsville (13-25) Wednesday night at Dozer Park.
The final game of Bradley's season-long, 9-game home stand was delayed 1-hour, 22-minutes by rain and both teams were sluggish after the delay.
Making his first start of the season, Bradley right-hander Peter Resnick allowed only one hit in his 3.0 innings of work. SIUE starter Mike Miller matched Resnick by allowing only one hit through his first 3.0 innings, before the Braves broke through in the fourth.
Right fielder Max Murphy opened the fourth with a line drive double off the left field wall, his team-leading 14th double of the year, then advanced to third on a Greg Partyka ground out and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.
After David Koll (3-3) faced the minimum six batters over the next two innings, the Braves gained some insurance in the sixth with a 4-run outburst. Gaa started the rally with a leadoff single, the stole second with one out and scored on a Partyka base hit for a 2-0 lead. The Cougars used shortstop Skyler Geissinger to relieve Miller (0-3) and he loaded the bases on consecutive walks. After Geissinger fanned Brady Wilkin for the second out, Ashbeck came through with a 2-run single to right field. Geissinger re-loaded the bases by hitting Isaac Smith, then he uncorked a wild pitch to plate Bradley's fifth run of the game.
Bradley, which is 17-7 overall away from home this season, will play six of its next seven games on the road, beginning with a 3-game Missouri Valley Conference series this weekend at league co-leader Evansville.
