TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Freshman Thea Hedemann (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Walter Murray) is one shot out of the lead and the Bradley women's golf team is tied for third after the opening round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship Sunday.
All five BU golfers shot in the 70's as the Braves turned in their lowest round of the year with a first-round 305. Bradley is six shots behind first-round leader Northern Iowa (299) and five shots back of second-place Missouri State (300). Sunday's 305 at the par-72 Country Club of Terre Haute was the team's lowest round since carding a 303 in the final round of last year's MVC Championship in Normal, Ill.
Hedemann is one shot behind individual leader Katie Tabbert of Northern Iowa in second place, firing a one-over par 73 Sunday. Joining Hedemann in the top 10 was senior Erin Gorman (Rockford, Ill./Boylan), who is tied for sixth entering Monday's second round after carding a career-best three-over par 75.
Freshman Christie Lin (Calgary, Alberta/Sir John G Diefenbaker) shot her team-leading 24th round in the 70's with an opening-round 78 and is tied for 23rd after 18 holes. Senior Kelly Amundrud (Calgary, Alberta/Strathcona Tweedsmuir) and Cassandra Marschall (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield/Wisconsin-Green Bay) both turned in 79's and are tied for 25th after day one.
The Braves are tied with I-74 rival Illinois State for third in the team standings at 305. Wichita State is fifth overall at 311, while tournament-host Indiana State and Southern Illinois finished the day tied for sixth (313). Drake closed the day in eighth (323), with Evansville (9th - 327) and Creighton (10th - 337) completing the field, respectively.
The second round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship is scheduled to tee off Monday at 9:30 a.m. (CDT).
