While Sunday's outbreak of tornadoes did not physically touch Bradley University's campus, a great many people associated with Bradley - students, alumni, faculty, staff and supporters - are dealing with the storm's aftermath, including the destruction of their homes.
Bradley Athletics is operating within the University's emergency response plan for Central Illinois tornado relief and campus officials are working with local agencies to determine how best the Braves can be of service through raising funds, donating supplies or volunteering. Bradley University has launched a website where visitors can find information on the relief efforts: bradley.edu/tornadorelief. The website will continue to be updated with ways in which people may assist with relief efforts.
Local agencies have stressed the best way to assist the initial relief efforts is through financial donations. Bradley University is hosting a fundraiser for tornado victims and donations may be made at the Student Activities Office (141 Sisson). Spare change, cash or check will be accepted. Checks may be made payable to American Red Cross with Central Illinois Tornado Response in the memo line. Funds will be collected until noon Monday, Nov. 25.
Among the many fundraising efforts on-going throughout the area, former Bradley Athletics graphic design intern Derek Oddo has designed a t-shirt with the expression Central Illinois Strong and all proceeds generated from the sale of the $10 shirt by his company, Gainlight Studios, will be donated to the Peoria chapter of the American Red Cross. Central Illinois Strong t-shirts may be purchased online.
Additional ways to give:
Call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcross.org to make a donation. Tell them you want your donation to go to the "Central Illinois Tornado Response."
Donations can also be made to the Salvation Army. Request that your donation is used for the "Illinois November Tornado Relief Effort."
Bradley University faculty and staff can also make a contribution to the Red Cross or Salvation Army through the Bradley United Way Campaign Contribution Form.
Donation of Supplies
Bradley will host a supply drive beginning Tuesday, November 19, through Monday, November 25, during regular hours of operation at the Markin Center. We are collecting toiletries, bottled water, Gatorade, and non-perishable food items (granola bars, cliff bars, crackers, cereal, mac and cheese).
In the coming days we will have details on how the Bradley community can help with clean up. At this time first responders are still securing the scene in Washington and request that individuals DO NOT head to the area to volunteer.
Make a Tie Blanket
This week the campus is invited to make tie blankets for children affected by the tornadoes. Stop by the Robert H. Michel Student Center in room 5 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. all week (while supplies last) to participate.
