PEORIA, Ill. – Boasting a wide range of experience in marketing, fundraising and education the last 15 years, Dr. Brett Burchette has been hired as Bradley University Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs, Bradley Director of Athletics Dr. Michael Cross announced Monday.
Burchette will begin his duties at Bradley June 9 and he will have direct oversight of Marketing & Promotions, Ticket Operations and the Braves Club, while serving as the athletic department's liaison to the Bradley Sports Properties corporate sales team.
“Brett Burchette is a fantastic addition to our department’s senior staff and the perfect person to lead our external affairs initiatives,” said Cross. “His high-level experience, intelligence, work ethic, infectious and positive personality and Midwestern roots all were important factors in him being named to the position. Every person I spoke to about Brett could not have been more enthusiastic about his ability to take Bradley Athletics to a new level of performance and he will begin to make his mark on Bradley Athletics immediately. I look forward to welcoming him and his family to Peoria next month.”
Burchette, who earned his doctorate in educational leadership and management from Drexel University in 2013, comes to Bradley from Drexel, where he has been an assistant professor in sport management in the Goodwin College of Professional Studies since July 2008.
Prior to his time at Drexel, Burchette was Associate Director of Athletics for External Operations at Missouri Valley Conference rival Indiana State from 2006-08. In his role with the Sycamores, Burchette had direct oversight of Athletics Development, Marketing & Promotions and Media Relations, while also serving as the university liaison to Nelligan Sports Marketing. During his 2-year tenure in Terre Haute, Indiana State experienced a 59 percent increase in athletic contributions and a 400 percent increase in corporate sponsorships.
“I would like to thank President (Joanne) Glasser, Dr. Cross and the entire search committee for providing me the opportunity and privilege to serve Bradley University as the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs,” said Burchette. “I look forward to working under the direction of Dr. Cross to develop a strategy to build upon our existing base of support, develop new partnerships and ultimately secure the necessary resources for our student-athletes and coaches to succeed both on and off the field of competition.
“My family and I are excited to return to the Midwest and call Peoria our new home,” Burchette added.
Originally from Indiana, Burchette received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Indiana University in 1997, then earned his master’s degree in sport and recreation administration from Temple University in 2000 while working as a graduate assistant in Athletic Development.
Burchette transitioned from athletic development to corporate sales by joining the Nelligan Sports Marketing team in 2001, first serving as an account executive for Temple University Sports Marketing, then as General Manager of Georgetown Sports Marketing. Prior to his time at Indiana State, Burchette spent three years at Northeastern University, first as Assistant Director of Athletics for External Affairs, then as Associate Director of Athletics/Director of Athletic Development.
Burchette and his wife, Patty, have two children: Caroline (10) and Owen (3).
