TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Bradley women's golf team entered the day in second place, but slipped to fifth in the final team standings at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship despite carding the second lowest round of the season (306) Tuesday.
Freshman Thea Hedemann (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Walter Murray), who was named MVC Newcomer of the Year, tied for fifth in the final individual standings to pace the Braves.
Bradley opened Tuesday's final round two shots behind second-round leader Northern Iowa and matched the Panthers final-round 306. Struggles late in the round and strong final round scores by Illinois State (six-over 294), Southern Illinois (296) and Missouri State (297) helped the trio overtake the Braves in the final team standings as BU slipped to fifth overall.
Pre-championship favorite Missouri State claimed the team title with a 54-hole total of 910 at the par-72 Country Club of Terre Haute, with Illinois State finishing three shots back in second (913). Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois were three behind the Redbirds in a tie for third (916), edging Bradley by two shots. The Braves were 15 shots better than sixth-place Wichita State (933).
Hedemann also earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors and was the top individual finisher for BU, shooting a 79 to tie for fifth at 226 for her team-best fourth top-10 finish of the year. She was six shots behind individual medalist Katie Jean of Illinois State (220) and three shots out of the top three. Hedemann's 77.91 season stroke average is the third lowest by a BU freshman and 11th best season average in program history overall.
Fellow freshman Christie Lin (Calgary, Alberta/Sir John G Diefenbaker) finished the year on a strong note, carding a two-over par 74 to close play in ninth (228). One of two players in program history with 26 or more sub-80 rounds in a season, Lin's team-leading 77.63 stroke average is the best by a Bradley freshman and ranks as the ninth best season average at BU.
Sophomore Cassandra Marschall (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield/Wisconsin-Green Bay) was one-under par at the turn and matched a season-low with a two-over 74 Tuesday. Marschall tied for 18th overall at 232 and averaged 77.3 strokes per round over her last six rounds to close the season.
Senior Kelly Amundrud (Calgary, Alberta/Strathcona Tweedsmuir) wrapped up her stellar career with a final-round 79 and tied for 22nd (236), missing the top 20 by two shots. The two-time All-MVC performer and 2010-11 MVC Golfer of the Year, Amundrud battled back injuries throughout the 2011-12 season and closed out her collegiate playing days with a Bradley career record 77.11 stroke average in addition to owning a program record 87 career rounds in the 70's.
Rounding out the scoring for Bradley was senior Erin Gorman (Rockford, Ill./Boylan), who finished 29th overall at 239. Gorman, who shot a career-best 75 in the opening round, finished play with a final-round 85 Tuesday.
