IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Sophomore Taylor Johnson (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) won the mile at the Iowa Invitational and was one of eight individuals to turn in career or season-best efforts Friday in the Bradley women's track and field team's last meet before the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships.
Johnson beat her previous career-best mile time by 13 seconds, clocking a 5:03.55 to edge out freshman Kristen Busch (Waterloo, Ill./Freeburg) for top honors. Johnson's time is the second fastest time of the year for the Braves behind Busch's effort last week at Iowa State of 5:02.87 and ranks 11th among Bradley career-best times.
BU had the top three finishers in the mile with Kristen Busch following in second at 5:05.53 and twin sister Caitlin Busch (Waterloo, Ill./Freeburg) in third with a season-best time of 5:06.02. The other Braves in the field also turned in two career-best times and one season-best time in the mile.
Sophomore Dana Markech (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) highlighted the sprints for Bradley, running career-best times in both the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles. Her 60-meter time of 8.46 seconds is the best on the squad this year and 11th all-time in school history, while she improved her career-best 60-meter hurdle time to 9.98 seconds. Markech also finished 23rd in the 200 meters, crossing the line in a time of 28.87 seconds.
Junior Sarah Higgins (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) paced four Braves in the 800 meters, finishing fourth overall at 2:24.07 and missed matching her career-best time by three one-hundredths of a second. Freshman Lauren Houmes (Hoopeston, Ill./Hoopeston) was right behind Higgins in fifth at 2:24.12 in the first 800 meters of her collegiate career.
Bradley wrapped up the day's competition with the 4x400 meter relay with three teams competing in the field. BU's top group took seventh overall with a time of 4:22.74.
Bradley returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
