Bradley freshman forward Christian Okeke (Wichita Falls, Texas/Rider H.S.) has collected a pair of weekly awards Monday based on his 2-goal performance in Wednesday’s 3-2, overtime win at then No. 3 Northwestern.
Okeke has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week and has earned a spot on the 11-player College Soccer News National Team of the Week, both announced Monday. The MVC award is Bradley’s third weekly honor of the season from the league, following Defensive Player-of-the-Week awards for goalkeeper Brian Billings Sept. 3 and Sept. 16. Okeke also becomes the third Bradley player recognized nationally this season, following Zach Kovacevic, who was named to the CSN National Team of the Week Sept. 23 and Billings to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week Sept. 3.
The freshman forward scored his first two career goals Wednesday night, the first just eight minutes into the game against a Wildcats squad that entered the contest with six shutouts during its 7-game winning streak. After Northwestern rallied from two goals down late in regulation to force overtime, Okeke collected a pass from Wojciech Wojcik and made a run through into the left flank before beating Wildcats keeper Tyler Miller with a toe-balled shot for the golden winner at 97:58.
Bradley, which has won a pair of games against teams ranked among the Soccer America top three this season, will return to action Monday night by hosting in-state rival Western Illinois in a 7 p.m. game at Shea Stadium. It will be Faith and Family Fun Night at Shea Stadium and former America’s Got Talent competitor Daniel Jens will sing the national anthem and perform at halftime.
