PEORIA, Ill. - Dan Brewer and the Tampa Yankees (New York Yankees) will host Brevard County in game one of the opening round of the Class A Advanced Florida State League playoffs tonight at 7 p.m. This is Brewer's first trip to the post-season and Tampa's first playoff berth since 2004. Brewer is hitting .290 for the Yankees this season with four homeruns and 29 RBI's. The winner of this three-game series will face the Charlotte-Fort Meyers winner for the Florida State League Championship Sept. 11-15. Another former Brave will also be making his first appearance in the post-season this week. Catcher Ryan Eigsti and the Wilmington Blue Rocks (Kansas City Royals) will face Lynchburg in the Class A Advanced Carolina League playoffs. The best-of-five series begins Sept. 9 with the winner advancing to the Carolina League Championship Sept. 14-19. Eigsti has three homeruns and 35 RBI's for the Blue Rocks this season. Right-hander Rob Scahill picked up his first win of the season as the Tri-City Dust Devils (Colorado Rockies) of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League edged Boise 3-2 last Saturday. Scahill threw 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six. Tri-City beat Salem-Keizer 2-0 in game one of the best-of-five Northwest League Championship series Monday night. Last Tuesday, Ryan Curry belted a triple and drove in three runs as the Jupiter Hammerheads (Florida Marlins) of the Class A Advanced Florida State League defeated Charlotte 6-3. Although they did not advance to the post-season, the Hammerheads won six of their final seven games and Curry ended the season with a seven-game hit streak. He finished with a .277 average, 18 doubles, 10 homeruns and 32 RBI's. In his last four appearances, relief pitcher Brian Shouse has surrendered only one earned run and two hits as the Tampa Bay Rays continue to battle for the American League Wild Card playoff spot. Shouse and the Rays are tied with the Seattle Mariners for third in standings and trail the Boston Red Sox by 7.5 games. |
