Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
KENT, Ohio – Sophomore Vanessa Markert (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Brown County) scored a career-best 12 points to lead three Bradley players in double figures, but Kent State topped the Braves 77-52 in the season opener for both teams Friday at the M.A.C. Center.

Markert scored the first four points of the night for Bradley and finished with a career-best 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting in 22 minutes of action.  Senior Leti Lerma (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) joined her in double figures with 11 points, eight boards, two blocks and two steals as she finished two boards short of a third consecutive double-double.  Freshman Chelsea Brackmann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) had a strong debut, collecting 10 points, six rebounds and two steals off the bench to help lead the Braves.

Kent State held a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and took advantage of Bradley foul trouble in the second quarter to open a 14-1 run with 10 consecutive points.  The Golden Flashes led by as many as 20 points in the second and held a 43-25 lead at the half.

Bradley held Kent State to 28 percent shooting in the third quarter and 33 percent in the final period.  The Braves were unable to chip into the Golden Flashes' lead, however, and opened the season with a 77-52 setback.

Larissa Lurken made 8-of-11 free throw attempts and led Kent State with a game-high 22 points as she was one of three players to score in double figures.  McKenna Stephens was 5-for-6 from the field and had 12 points, while Ali Poole added 11 points off the bench for the Golden Flashes.

Bradley closes out a two-game road swing Sunday with a noon (CST) game at Butler.
