Braves Drop Weekend Opener To NIU

FARGO, N.D. -- Sophomore Erica Haslag (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias Catholic) had a team-best 11 kills, but Northern Illinois hit .337 as a team and served up seven aces to top Bradley 28-26, 25-20, 25-12 Friday afternoon on the opening day of the North Dakota State Classic.

Haslag reached double figures in kills for the fourth time in as many outings on the young season and the ninth time in 15 career non-conference contests, finishing with a team-best 11. Junior Jamie Livaudais (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) added nine kills off the bench.

Bradley (2-2 overall) led for a good portion of the first set, but three consecutive Northern Illinois points gave the Huskies a 20-19 lead. The Braves fought off three set points with Haslag tying it up at 26-26 with her sixth kill of the frame. Lauren Zielinski answered with a kill of her own, however, to put Northern Illinois back in front and a Bradley attack error closed out a 28-26 NIU win.

Northern Illinois (3-1 overall) led 19-13 in the second set before a 4-0 spurt got the Braves back in the contest. Junior Afton Sobasky (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) followed back-to-back NIU hitting errors with an ace and one of Bradley's five second-set blocks made it a two-point deficit at 19-17. With the Huskies leading 20-18, Mary Grace Kelly and Jenna Radtke notched consecutive kills to push the NIU lead back to four at 22-18. Radtke added two more kills down the stretch to help her team take the second set 25-20.

In the third, Bradley trailed 8-6 after a Kelsey Cave (Solon, Iowa/Solon) kill when Radtke sparked a 4-0 Huskie spurt with a kill. Taylor Krage highlighted what turned out to be a 13-3 NIU run with three kills and two aces as Northern Illinois built a commanding a 21-9 lead. NIU hit .562 in the set and completed the three-set victory with a 25-12 win.

The Braves continue play at the North Dakota State Classic Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against UTEP in Fargo, N.D.
